HP has New Home Network Server to Join PCs and Macs

The networked home might become a bit more networked with the introduction today of HP's updated version of the MediaSmart server for the home.  HP announced the launch of the product today, which is capable of managing data from both PCs and Macs. It connects to an HDTV television set.  Gizmodo has an extended story up with photos.

In May in Los Angeles, I interviewed HP's Carlos Montalvo about MediaSmart and the value in networking digital devices in the home.

Update: 12/30 There's been quite a lot of coverage of this development, check out Techmeme.

Hi,

A home server would in theory have all those useful yet very important files such as all your family photos or your mp3 archive... and you put it all on a single box with no backup and not even a mirrored RAID set??My data is way to important to even consider keeping it on a single hard drive. Any home server that doesn't at least have two drives is asking for lots of trouble.
