Sony Pictures CTO: Interoperability for Downloaded Media is Essential for the Entertainment Industry

CULVER CITY, CA -- The success of digital entertainment will result from true interoperability between consumer devices, says Mitch Singer, Chief Technology Officer of Sony Pictures.
Earlier this month I visited him on on the Sony lot.

He is among a group of entertainment executives and academics who are working to create new standards in downloadable media.  He says it is essential that this content work across multiple devices, much like DVD's.

There is a big movement underway in Hollywood to unify formats.  But, after witnessing the just concluded nasty DVD format war and the dominance of Apple, it's hard to see how things can be unified anytime soon.

We will be covering this topic in the days ahead with interviews with thought leaders from IBM and the University of Southern California.

Hi,
the report cautions that these systems must not crush interoperability among different technologies. Moreover, the OECD worries that technologies may undermine ‘fair use’ provisions for lawfully excerpting portions of a work.
