Microsoft has just released an advanced Beta of Silverlight, the new multi-media authoring, encoding and user platform.  The technology competes directly with Adobe’s ubiquitous Flash ecosystem.

Like Flash, users of Silverlight need to download a thin Web-based application. Here’s a good explanation from PC World

The big public introduction of Silverlight will be its use as the new online video platform for Major League Baseball.  This will happen later this summer, in time for the playoffs, sources in Redmond tell Beet.TV

In May, at the Streaming Media East conference, I interviewed Microsoft’s Sean Alexander who provided a sneak preview of baseball’s new digital playing field.  (You are watching this in Flash, natch.)
