“There are very few things in life that you cannot get yourself out of.”

This advice became a professional mantra for Lauren Beckstedt, CMO of Brunswick Corporation, giving her the permission to try new things, take risks, and step out of her comfort zone.

In this video interview with research analyst Joanna O’Connell for Beet.TV, Beckstedt says she believes that resilience is a critical quality for leaders, particularly in the face of challenges that might affect women more than men, such as childcare responsibilities.

Behind the polished exterior

Beckstedt encourages young leaders to look beyond the polished image of executives and recognize that everyone’s journey can be messy.

She emphasizes the importance of showing vulnerability and making mistakes.

“I think teams are inspired by leaders who will jump in and dig in and do it with them. And frankly, how you handle mistakes is super important in your own leadership journey.”

Creating a safe and inclusive space

Brunswick Corporation operates in the recreational marine and fitness industries. The company was founded in 1845 and is headquartered in Mettawa, Illinois.

Brunswick is divided into three primary business segments: Marine Engine, Boat, and Fitness.

In her efforts to create a more inclusive culture within Brunswick Corporation, Beckstedt focuses on fostering a safe space for employees to make mistakes and be their authentic selves: “I want the pink hair, I want the tattoos. I want whatever you are most comfortable wearing because that’s how you’re going to get everyone’s best self.”

This approach, she believes, leads to an inherently inclusive environment where people can truly thrive.

Examples of purpose-driven initiatives

Brunswick Corporation has implemented several programs that focus on the voice of the consumer and shape their strategic agenda.

One example is the All Blue Planet program, which aims to create access to water and boating for a more diverse population.

Another is the Ripple consumer advocacy group, which engages with boaters and boating enthusiasts to gather insights on sustainability and product innovation.

These programs demonstrate the brand’s commitment to integrating purpose into their business strategy, Beckstedt says.
