YouTube Has Speech-to-Text Functionality.....and it Works

YouTube has introduced rich metadata into select videos, which will significantly impact how online video is discovered and consumed.

Announced in June, we have found the technology is very useful.  Last week, we got an update on this from Steve Grove, head of news and politics at YouTube.

YouTube applies a technology in which automated spiders "listen" and transcribe the words in the audio track of a video.  This transcription, in the form of metadata, is embedded into the video.

This new speech-to-text technology has been applied to campaign videos from John McCain and Barack Obama as well as non-campaign produced clips.  The search box is found on YouTube You Choose page.  (It's on the lower left area of the page.) Visitors can enter words such as "Iraq, "Global Warming," and "Free Trade."  Also, putting your cursor over the timeline, you can see the transcription.

While this is the first voice-to-text speech application at YouTube and will likely expand, this is an emerging area in video search.  Companies including Blinkx, EveryZing and Delve are providing voice-to-text transcriptions in the form of metadata.

Later this year, Adobe, will provide speech-to-text technology into the Flash video production environment, Beet.TV has learned.  This is a critically important development in bringing effective search to online video.

I interviewed Steve at Stanford last week where he was a panelist on the Beet.TV online video roundtable.

Here's story about YouTube and the new voice-to-text features by Anthony Ha at Venture Beat.

McCain's Obama Celebrity Video is Blockbuster on YouTube

Uploaded to YouTube less than 24 hours ago, the McCain campaign ad about Obama's "celebrity" status, comparing him with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, has had 750,000 views at this  hour.

WOW!! this is a great move forward for online video and search in general. Thanks for the post

I think hhis would make an EXCELLENT API/service to make available to *any* video site - on an on-demand basis (and even paid for) - to further help Google's ability to discover the ever-increasing amount of video online.

This is also going to be great in combination with Google Translate, this would in fact provide subtitles in all languages for all Youtube videos.

This will make it possible to upload videos to Youtube without having to spend time yourself filling out the metadata informations. Metadata will come from voice recognition and from users invideo comments.

This would be a great tool for the Federal Government. That's one of the major drawbacks to using YouTube by the Government because we have to meet Section 508 requirements for all web based content including synchronized transcripts with video. It would be interesting to see how accurate it is on scientific content with uncommon words. If YouTube can make this happen easily for all videos, and accurately, then there's a good chance more of the Federal Government will be open to heavily using YouTube.

This sounds like the technology
Blinkx has patented i hope its not
taken from this company Blinkx but
something smells funny here.

Now the Search Engines, to know what's the video about, are restrictet content created basically to tag it: Title, Despription, some keywords.

This could allow them to really understand the video content, and thus provide better results.

Google is amazing. This is a great innovation.

The is incredible. The entire DAO/AVSEO industry will have to revive their game plan if the search engines can now read the content of a video.

Phenomenal achievement.

This sounds a great idea. I imagine the impact is going to be massive.

Washington State's non-profit public affairs network has been using this type of technology for over a year now and it has been a huge step in helping citizens find what they are looking for and be involved in their government process. TVW has over 60k hours of video/audio voice to text indexed of Washington states Legislative, supreme court and public policy proceedings in Washington state. This is a step in the right direction for you-tube.
