We were delighted to hear about Michelle Obama's plans for an organic vegetable garden on the White House grounds. But were dismayed, along with many foodie bloggers, to learn that beets are not a among the 55 varieties of vegetables planned for the garden.
Tara Parker-Pope reported on this in The New York Times reported earlier this week.
Not sure if this is part of the President's stated dislike of the our favorite root vegetable, but we hope not. Beets are "the new super food" -- very healthy and delicious.
We suggest the White House plant heirloom beets (see them in this salad on this page), the small ones brought over from France about 35 years ago. For more about these tiny, tasty beets, I interviewed famed Santa Monica/New York chef/restaurateur/uber foodie Michael McCarty of Michael's.
Hey Mr. President, EAT BEETS!

I agree -- happy that there is a garden at all. as long as they're not growing corn to turn into high fructose corn syrup, i couldn't care less what's in their veggie patch. can't we just count this as a victory and move on?
